LEGO, Duplo, Magna-Tiles: At What Age to Switch to What?

Duplo from 18 months, LEGO Classic at 4-5, Magna-Tiles at 3. How to combine these 3 references without overlap or gaps, buddy? Here's the ideal progression to follow your little one without wasting a single euro.

Kids' building timeline: from Duplo to LEGO Technic in 6 years

Here's the ideal progression between 18 months and 8 years for these 3 must-have references:

18 months - 3 years: LEGO Duplo

Oversized bricks (≥ 32 mm). No choking risk. Free building only (no plan). The child stacks, mixes, dismantles. It's the only system suited to this age.

3 - 5 years: transition Duplo to LEGO Classic and Magna-Tiles

The child can start mixing Duplo and LEGO Classic (partial compatibility, especially on 4×2 bricks). You can also introduce Magna-Tiles from age 3 — it's the ideal age to start.

At this stage, you have 2 complementary systems: Duplo/LEGO (figurative building) + Magna-Tiles (architecture, 3D geometry).

5 - 8 years: LEGO Classic + Kapla + themed boxes

The child follows plans, dismantles, rebuilds multiple times. LEGO Classic as base + 1-2 themed boxes (City, Friends) per year. Magna-Tiles continues in parallel. Kapla 280 box is an excellent complement to work on patience and pure balance.

8+ years: LEGO Technic / LEGO Boost

For kids who really get hooked, we shift to LEGO Technic (mechanisms) or LEGO Boost (programming). Magna-Tiles becomes secondary (but remains played occasionally).

LEGO Duplo, Classic, Magna-Tiles: do you really need to buy everything?

No buddy. The bare minimum for your little one: Duplo from 18 months → LEGO Classic at 5. Magna-Tiles is a plus if the child loves building. If not, save 70€.
