What is the board games category?
Board games are the school of rules: waiting your turn, losing, winning, negotiating, cooperating, planning ahead. They're also a powerful family bonding lever β a lot of childhood memories get built around the game table.
The minimum age on the box is usually reliable with the good publishers (Haba, Asmodee, Days of Wonder). Watch out for under-rated ages on mass-market games sold in big-box stores.
Around 4-5 years, your child can accept losing. That's when you bring in the first simple competitive games (Memory, Loto, Petit Bac). Before that, stick with cooperative (everyone wins or loses together).

Kids' board games: cooperative or competitive?
Cooperative
Ideal for: young kids (3-5), siblings with age gaps, tense family moments, intro to rules. Examples: Orchard, Pandemic, Forbidden Island, Mysterium.
Competitive
Ideal for: kids 5+ who accept losing, high-energy moments, strategy development, regular matches. Examples: Mille Bornes, Catan, 7 Wonders, Azul.
Mix both in your collection. 1 cooperative for calm evenings, 1 quick competitive for birthday parties, 1 long strategy game for rainy holidays. Three well-chosen games cover 90% of situations.
FAQ kids' board games 4-12 years
My child cries when they lose, do we stop?
No, you keep going but in cooperative mode. Competitive will come at their pace β often around 5-6, sometimes later. Forcing it is useless and ruins the fun.
How many games to have at home?
5 to 10 well-chosen games > 30 games half of which never come out. Aim for 1 family cooperative, 1 quick snack-time game, 1 evening strategy game, 1 solo / 2-player game, and 2-3 party games for big gatherings.
Can digital games replace board games?
No. A board game around a table activates skills digital can't: eye contact, verbal negotiation, reading body language, managing group rhythm. A whole social school is happening there.
