What is the outdoor & garden category?
The physical, outdoor, energetic category. Slide, trampoline, swing, playhouse, sandcastle, inflatable pool: everything that burns energy, gets fresh air and works on gross motor skills. Kids with regular access to these games sleep better, eat better and focus better at school.
The WHO recommends at least 3h of physical activity per day between ages 3 and 5, including 1h moderate to intense. Outdoor toys are the #1 lever to hit that target without a fight.

Outdoor toys: trampoline, slide, playhouse, sandbox
Trampoline
Safety net required. Sizes: 244cm for an average garden, 305-366cm for a big garden. Reliable brands: Decathlon, Plum, Berg, Salta. Check the weight limit (usually 80-150kg).
Slide & swing set
Plastic (Smoby, Little Tikes) for ages 2-6, wood (Soulet, Trigano) for full 4-10 year-old structures. Look for EN71-1 and EN1176 standards (outdoor play equipment).
Playhouse & play area
Autoclave-treated wood playhouse: a €300-1500 investment that lasts 10+ years. Often picked up used on local classifieds for half price. Check the wood (class 4 minimum for permanent outdoor use).
Sand, water, gardening
Sandbox (cover against cats), Step2 water table, sprinklers, mini-watering can, kids' gardening kit. The sand+water combo is unbeatable between ages 2 and 5 for fine motor and imagination.
Sports & balls
Mini soccer goal (ages 5-12), adjustable basketball hoop, frisbee, badminton, lawn games. Aim for sports with no strict competition before age 8.
Outdoor toys: what I avoid (low-end trampolines, fragile plastic)
- Trampolines with no net (French law: net required on new sales since 2020, but the used market is full of them)
- Thin-plastic playhouses that crack at the first winter (Smoby Maison Friends > the budget line)
- Inflatable pools > 30cm deep without constant supervision (silent drowning in 2 min, the #1 cause of accidental death ages 1-4)
- Swings hung from tree branches without yearly inspection (invisible wood rot)
For any pool > 50cm deep, the child must be within arm's reach of an adult at all times. No "I'll just answer the phone." 1 minute = 1 life.
FAQ kids' outdoor and garden toys
What age for a trampoline?
Officially age 6 per the American Academy of Pediatrics (one kid at a time on the trampoline). In France many start around age 4-5 with net and supervision. Skip before age 4: high risk of tibia fractures.
DIY or store-bought sandbox?
DIY works great (4 planks + cat-proof net). Store-bought = a bit pricier but clean and ready to assemble. Specific play sand required (construction sand = silica, dangerous to inhale).
Do you need a big garden for this category?
No. A 10m² patio already fits a slide + sandbox + water table. A 244cm trampoline takes 12-15m². If you really have no space, lean on local parks nearby and rotate with your own portable gear (frisbee, ball, jump ropes).
