What is the puzzles category?
Puzzles are the antidote to channel-flipping. Sustained focus, pincer-grip fine motor, spatial logic, satisfaction of completion. A toy that gets replayed dozens of times and grows with your child: wooden peg puzzles at 18 months β 1000 pieces at age 12, it's the same skill being refined.
It's also a solo and social category: you can do a puzzle alone or with the family around the table, in silence or chatting. A rare combo.
Around age 3-4, a child can do a 24-piece puzzle independently. At 6, 100 pieces. At 8, 250 pieces. At 10, 500-1000 pieces. The progression is clear and linear.

Kids' puzzles by age: from peg puzzles to 1000-piece sets
1-3 years: peg puzzles
Wood or chunky plastic. Animals, shapes, vehicles. Janod, Goki, Hape are the references. Grip is helped by the big pegs on each piece.
3-5 years: 24-50 pieces
First real piece puzzles. Brands: Djeco, Janod, Ravensburger Junior. Aim for puzzles in a theme your child loves (dinosaurs, princesses, cars, animals).
5-8 years: 100-250 pieces
Disney "star" puzzles, street scenes, world maps. Brands: Ravensburger, Schmidt, Nathan. The puzzle mat (roll-up) becomes useful for pausing between sessions.
8-12 years: 500-2000 pieces
Complex puzzles, accessible adult themes (landscapes, art, detailed illustrations). 1000-piece Ravensburger = the standard. Beyond that, premium brands: Heye, Educa, Castorland.
Beyond classic puzzles: brain teasers and spatial logic
Logic puzzles (Smartgames)
Board + booklet of progressive challenges. Smartgames is the go-to brand (Day & Night, IQ Puzzler, Anti-Virus). Scalable, self-correcting, played solo.
Rubik's Cube & variants
From age 7-8. The classic 3Γ3 stays a lifetime challenge. Variants for every level: Pyraminx, Megaminx, Rubik's Race. Pocket case < β¬15.
Tangram & geometric puzzles
7 pieces, infinite figures. Wood or magnetic. Excellent school complement for geometry. Goki, Plan Toys, Djeco.
Riddles & home escape games
From age 8-9. Unlock!, Escape Room The Game sets. A 60-90 min family evening. Wildly engaging activity that rivals any screen.
FAQ kids' puzzles and brain teasers
My child gives up after 5 minutes, is that normal?
At ages 3-4, yes β focus isn't solid yet. The rule: you start with them, you slip away after 5 minutes, you come back 10 min later to praise them. The satisfaction of finishing creates the urge to do it again.
Where to store an unfinished 1000-piece puzzle?
A Ravensburger or Schmidt puzzle mat (β¬15-25): you roll the puzzle up without disturbing the pieces. Otherwise, a dedicated tray on a side table. Avoid the "cardboard flat on the couch": one dog, one cat, game over.
Are 3D puzzles worth it?
Not for their "puzzle" value but as a decorative object. Often fragile, little replay value once built. Prefer a real classic 1000-piece puzzle for the same budget β it can be redone.
