Kids' vehicles by age: from 12-month ride-on to 24" bike
12-24 months: ride-on
4 wheels, child pushes with their feet. Wood (Janod, Vilac) or plastic (Little Tikes Cozy Coupe). First "vehicle" toy.
2-4 years: balance bike
2 wheels, no pedals. Wood, metal or aluminum. Learning balance. Top brands: Kinderkraft, Strider, Janod.
3-5 years: 3-wheel scooter
Maximum stability, 2-min onboarding. Micro Mini, Globber, Hudora. Long warranty = excellent durability-price ratio.
4-6 years: first bike (12-14")
With training wheels OR straight without (if the balance bike did its job). Serious brands: Frog, Btwin (Decathlon), Puky.
5-8 years: 2-wheel scooter
More demanding on balance. Micro Sprint, Razor. ABEC-7+ bearings for smoothness.
7-12 years: 16-24" bike
First road bike or beginner MTB. Helmet mandatory until age 12 (French law).
Balance bike, bike and scooter: safety and protective gear
- Helmet: required until age 12 in France (2017 law). Choose a fitted size + EN1078 standard.
- Knee + elbow pads: essential for skateboard, rollerblades, 2-wheel scooter.
- Gloves: useful for bike and scooter in winter, or for BMX.
- Visibility: reflective yellow vest for road traffic, front/rear lights.
No electric scooter before age 12 (French law). No skateboard without full protective gear before age 8. No electric bike before age 14 (power capped at 250W).
FAQ kids' vehicle toys 1-12 years
Balance bike or tricycle for my 2-year-old?
Balance bike, no hesitation. It really builds balance. A tricycle mostly trains pedaling in circles, which has almost no carry-over to riding a real bike later.
What age for the first bike without training wheels?
If your child has used a balance bike, around 4-5 years directly. Without a balance bike, more like 6-7 after a period with training wheels. The balance bike cuts the learning curve by 1 to 2 years.
How to pick the right bike size?
The child should put both feet flat on the ground while sitting on the seat (first bike). For later bikes, balancing on tiptoes is OK. Standard sizes: 12" (ages 3-5), 14-16" (5-7), 20" (7-10), 24" (10-12), 26" (12+).
