The emotional and soothing category par excellence. The lovey (transitional object described by Winnicott in 1953) accompanies 70% of children between 6 months and 4 years. Later, "friend" plushies and collections (Lilliputiens, Jellycat, Gund) extend that emotional dimension up to 8-10 years.
A lovey isn't a whim: it's a psychological tool that helps your child manage separation anxiety, the transition to sleep, big changes (daycare, travel). Never take it away as punishment. It naturally exits stage left around ages 5-7.

Plushies and loveys by age: from flat lovey to companion plushie
0-6 months: super-soft flat lovey
Uniform fabric, no eyes or buttons that can be yanked off. Kaloo Plume, Doudou et Compagnie Lange. Tuck it against you for a few hours so it picks up your scent — baby will adopt it faster.
6-18 months: multi-texture plush + Sophie
The lovey becomes a companion. Sophie la Girafe for teething. First manipulable plushies (Lilliputiens, Trudi). Buy 2 identical ones in case one gets lost — the golden rule of seasoned parents.
18m-3 years: "character" lovey
The lovey gets a name, a story. Your child talks to it, feeds it, puts it to bed. The most intense phase of attachment. The lovey travels everywhere. Wash it when they're asleep at night, never in broad daylight ("it was crying" if you hesitate).
3-7 years: "friend" plushies & collections
Your child accumulates. 5-15 plushies on the bed, each with a role. Brands: Jellycat, Steiff, Gund. The main lovey stays central, the others are friends of the clan.
7-10 years: sentimental plushies
Your child keeps 2-3 "strong" plushies. The rest gather dust. It's OK to propose a sort (with them) at this stage. Always keep the original lovey as a keepsake — lots of adults still have theirs.
Plushies: what I avoid (giant plushies in the crib, fake brands)

- Plushies with snap-on eyes on very young kids (before age 2: ingestion risk if pulled off)
- Electronic talking / singing plushies (they kill imagination, disrupt sleep)
- Non-machine-washable plushies (in case of stomach bug or lice: tragedy)
Buy 2 identical loveys as soon as you see baby has adopted one. Keep the 2nd hidden. The day the 1st gets lost (and it will), pull out the 2nd — drama averted. Crucial between ages 1 and 4.
FAQ plushies and loveys 0-8 years
My child is 6 and still has their lovey, should I worry?
Not at all. The lovey is still very present until ages 6-7 for many kids, especially at bedtime and during transitions. It naturally drifts away as they enter elementary school. Never force weaning.
How to wash a lovey without destroying it?
Machine wash at 30°C (86°F / "warm" setting) in a pillowcase (anti-deformation), gentle fragrance-free detergent, air-dry hanging. Skip the dryer (deforms, damages stitched eyes). Frequency: every 1-2 weeks for the very young, monthly after age 3.
What if the lovey is permanently lost?
3-7 day mourning period depending on the child. Don't offer a "replacement" right away — it'd feel like betrayal. Let them express the sadness. A new one can arrive after a week, introduced as a "friend" not a replacement.
