Pretend play category
kitchen, garage, dress-up, dolls

The most powerful category between ages 2 and 7: "let's pretend" builds language, theory of mind, and emotional regulation.

What is the pretend play category?

Pretend play means "let's pretend": the kitchen, the shop, the garage, the doctor, the costume box. It's the most powerful category in the 2-7 age range, because it lets your child replay the world they observe, understand social roles, and digest emotions.

Around 18-24 months, pretend play shows up (feeding the plush, "calling" on a banana). Around 3-4 years, it gets narrative (the scenario thickens, multiple characters, complex dialogue).

🧠 Why it matters

Pretend play builds language, theory of mind (understanding that others have different thoughts), emotional regulation, and conflict resolution. By far the category with the highest developmental return between 2 and 6.

Pretend play toys: kitchen, shop, dress-up, tea sets

Kitchen, tea set, shop

The domestic universe. Play kitchen (Janod, Klein, Hape), wooden accessories, felt or wood fruit/vegetables, cash register. Easy 3-5 year lifespan. Don't forget real miniature utensils in metal (rolling pin, spoons) that lead into real cooking.

Garage, train, farm

The transport and living-world universe. Brio (wooden trains) from 18 months, Playmobil 1.2.3 from 18 months, Schleich (realistic animal figures) from age 3. Stick to one cohesive universe over 2-3 years rather than mixing 5 brands.

Costumes & dress-up sets

Princess, knight, doctor, firefighter, pirate, superhero. Often one costume per child per year (others get passed down between siblings). Durable brands: Souza! (Netherlands), Vah, Travis Designs.

Dolls & baby dolls

Fabric baby (KΓ€the Kruse, Corolle premium) from 12-15 months, real jointed baby from age 3, first changing/bottle set from 2-3. Boys play with dolls, it's healthy and important β€” it's learning to care.

Figurines & small worlds

Schleich (realistic animals), Playmobil (from age 4 for the classic version), Sylvanian Families (3-7 years). Building a "small world" on the coffee table = the favorite activity of 4-7 year olds.

Pretend play toys: what I avoid (gimmick sounds, over-theming)

  • Costumes that sexualize too early (ultra-glamour 4-year-old princesses, stereotyped "girly" outfits)
  • Ultra-specific licensed toys (one character = one use = trashed when the trend passes)
  • Bright plastic "shop" sets that last 6 months and get ugly
  • Electronic talking / crying / eating baby dolls (they kill the child's imagination work)

FAQ kids' pretend play 2-7 years

My child plays "violent" games (pirates, knights, superheroes), is that bad?

No. "Aggressive" pretend play is healthy and necessary between ages 4 and 7. That's how your child explores good/evil, power, winning and losing. Don't confuse symbolic aggression play (foam sword) with real aggression (genuinely wanting to hurt).

My son plays kitchen / my daughter plays garage, is that OK?

More than OK: it's excellent. The skills built (care, storytelling, planning, fine motor) are identical regardless of gender. Break stereotypes by offering both to all kids β€” they pick what they like next.

Should I play these games with my child?

Yes but let your child lead. You accept the role they give you, you follow their weird rules, you don't impose the storyline. 15-20 min a day of child-led pretend play = one of the best investments in 2-6 parenting.
