How to Choose the Right Developmental Toy for Your Baby: My Complete Age Guide (0-2 Years)
Which developmental toy for your baby? I'll help you choose by age (0-2 years), by developmental stage and based on your budget. My tested and caring guide.
It's the question that comes up most often in my notebook: "Ludik, which toy do I get for my baby?" You stand in front of the aisle, you see 200 references, you read "awakens the senses," "stimulates the brain," and you wonder what's true and what's marketing.
Let's take a look together. I've prepared a notebook page for each major milestone, from newborn to walking toddler.
The snuggle buddy who's got your back.
What a "good" developmental toy is (my 5 Ludik criteria)
✍️ Ludik's side note: these 5 criteria are my Ludik filter. Keep them in mind on every purchase, and you'll almost never go wrong.
1. The toy matches the developmental stage (not the marketing age)
The ages on boxes ("from 6 months") are indicative and often cautious for legal reasons. What really matters: where your buddy is at. A 5-month-old who already grabs everything is ready for a "6 month" activity cube. An 8-month-old who doesn't yet mouth objects doesn't need a teething toy. Observe your child, not the box.
2. Safety is non-negotiable (EN 71 standard + no small parts)
Any toy sold in Europe for under-3 must display the CE marking and comply with EN 71 (toy safety). No detachable small parts (diameter < 3 cm = ingestion hazard). For wood: water paint without solvent. For fabric: machine washable at 40°. If a toy doesn't state its standard, I pass.
3. The toy rewards baby's action (not the opposite)
A good developmental toy does something because baby did something: they press, it sounds. They shake, it rattles. They tap, it resonates. Toys that "do everything by themselves" (lights and sounds on loop) stimulate curiosity less than those requiring action. Favor the active baby, not the spectator.
4. The toy survives several developmental stages
A play mat with removable arches will serve from 0 to 12 months. A fabric activity cube will serve from 6 to 18 months. The price/usage-time ratio becomes good as soon as the toy covers 2-3 stages. Aim for evolutive when budget allows.
5. The toy pleases YOUR baby (not the manufacturer's average baby)
Not all babies like the same stimulations. Some love textures, others prefer sounds, still others movement. During the first 3 months, observe what makes them laugh or concentrate — it's your best future purchase guide.

Montessori, wood, plastic: my opinion without sugar-coating
The "Montessori" label guarantees nothing
The Montessori appellation isn't protected. Any manufacturer can stick it on. What really matters are the Montessori principles: error control by the child, natural materials, simplicity, prepared environment. A simple plastic toy can be very Montessori. A complicated wooden toy plastered with labels can not be at all.
Wood vs plastic: the false opposition
A good plastic toy (certified BPA-free, phthalate-free, EN 71 standard) is often safer than low-grade wood with unlisted varnish. Wood has the advantage of aging better aesthetically and lasting longer. But brand new, in pure safety, both can be at the same level. What matters: the standard + declared materials, not the material itself.
My personal home ratio
If I had to recommend a ratio for a balanced baby room: ~60% wood toys (durable, timeless), ~30% fabric toys (soft, washable), ~10% selected plastic toys (strict standard, specific function like teething or bath).
How I choose based on my monthly budget
✍️ Ludik's side note: here's the table I would have liked when I was a young advice-bear.
| Monthly budget | Strategy | Example by age |
|---|---|---|
| < 20 €/month | 1 well-chosen toy per stage (3 months) | Ludi cube at 6 months, Hape dinette at 18 months |
| 20-40 €/month | 1 main toy + 1 complement | Cube + Lamaze cloth book at 6 months |
| 40-80 €/month | Evolutive investment + complements | Fisher-Price 3-in-1 mat + Janod ride-on + dinette spread out |
| 80 €+/month | Complete setup per stage + library | Multiple themed toys + 5-10 books |
My universal advice: better 3 well-chosen and heavily used toys than 15 forgotten under the couch. Rotation (hide 2/3 of toys, take out by turns) works better than accumulation.
Parent questions I get a lot
Do you need a lot of toys to properly stimulate baby?
No. Developmental psychology studies are clear: an environment rich in human interactions stimulates much more than an environment rich in objects. 5-8 well-chosen and regularly rotated toys are worth more than 30 toys accumulated. The best developmental toy remains an attentive adult who talks, sings, tells stories.
How much to spend per month on 0-2 developmental toys?
No obligation. You can perfectly do 0-2 with 100€ total well spent (3 evolutive toys + 5-10 books). You can also spend 1500€. The difference on baby's development: marginal if you maintain regular human interactions.
My baby gets bored of their toys after 2 weeks — is it normal?
Yes, 100%. Novelty is a strong learning driver. The trick: do a rotation — store a third of toys for 2-3 weeks, then reintroduce them. They become "new" again. No need to buy more.
How to choose a birth gift that really serves?
The "useful birth gift" test: does it serve BEFORE 6 months? If yes (mobile, lovey, rattle), it's a good gift. If not (puzzle, dinette, first bike), it's pretty but sleeps in a closet for 1 year. Prefer purchases over time, and make a targeted baby registry if that's the custom in your family.
Should you buy specifically "Montessori" toys?
No if you're looking for the label. Yes if you adhere to the principles (simplicity, error control, autonomy). A basic wooden inset game respects Montessori principles without carrying the label. A toy plastered with the word "Montessori" may not respect them at all. Look for principles, not the word.

There you go. I'm closing the "developmental toy guide" page of my notebook. It was the fifth page of the sprint, and it's the most precious in my eyes — the one that'll serve as your compass every month for your buddy's first 2 years.
You'll come back to dip into it at every milestone. Me, I'm starting a new notebook, because this one is almost full.
See you soon, buddy.
