Montessori: Everything You're Not Told About the Label
The word 'Montessori' is everywhere on toys, buddy: on Amazon, in baby stores, on premium toy sites. But the label is NOT protected. Anyone can slap it on. Let's take a look together so you don't get fooled.
Why Montessori is not a registered trademark and everyone uses it
First thing to know: "Montessori" has fallen into the public domain. Any manufacturer can slap that word on any toy, including flashing plastic toys made in China that have nothing pedagogical about them.
Maria Montessori died in 1952. Her family never registered the term. Result: +340% use of the word on Amazon between 2018 and 2024 (PwC study), often without any pedagogical consistency.
The 4 real criteria of an authentic Montessori toy
A truly Montessori toy ticks these 4 criteria:
- Natural materials: wood, metal, fabric (rarely plastic)
- One single isolated difficulty: a shape sorter ONLY sorts shapes — no music, lights, sounds
- Self-correcting: the child sees their mistake without adult intervention (the piece doesn't fit in the right hole)
- Manipulable alone on the first try by a child of the target age

Reliable Montessori toy brands: Plan Toys, Goki, Nienhuis
If you want "real" Montessori: Plan Toys (Thai, FSC wood), Goki (German, traditional), Nienhuis (pro pedagogical material, expensive but authentic), Edx Education (school manipulatives).
To avoid: any "Montessori" product sold under 15€ on third-party marketplaces — quality doesn't follow, and often it doesn't respect the 4 criteria.
DIY Montessori trays: do better with what you have at home
The Montessori spirit is buy less, choose better, buddy. Many Montessori trays can be made at home with what you already have: bowls, spoons, lentils, clothespins, pouring. My Montessori universe details all that.
